This lecture focuses on cohort studies which are the non-experimental analytical studies. Cohort studies are also known as longitudinal, prospective, forward looking and incidence studies. It also gives the concept of 2 X 2 table for calculating relative risk. Cohort studies have two types, concurrent cohort studies (prospective or longitudinal) and Retrospective cohort studies (historical cohort or non-concurrent cohort studies). It should be noted that cohort was a group of soldiers in Roman Empire which formed a unit. It also tells the advantages and disadvantages of cohort studies. It presents Framingham study as an example of cohort study.
